Richard Simmons combines his expertise in network administration, engineering, and TV broadcast production with a deep passion for sustainability. Since 2006, he’s traveled the world, visiting nations like Honduras and South Africa, where his heart grew for sustainability after witnessing hunger and poverty firsthand. These experiences fueled his desire to help others through solar energy, electronics, and DIY homesteading. Now, he strives to balance his love for technology with a vision for a more sustainable future.
Richard B. Simmons’ passion for solar energy began on a sunny afternoon in Honduras. While discussing solar power with a close friend, he became fascinated by the concept of harnessing and storing energy from the sun.
Richard B. Simmons’ interest in solar energy was ignited during a conversation with his friend Lennin, a solar company owner in Honduras. As Lennin explained the process of harnessing and storing solar energy, Richard, a network engineer, was fascinated by the parallels with redundancy in network systems. The idea of capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into something usable resonated deeply with his technical background. Over the years, this curiosity blossomed into a passion for solar energy and sustainability.
Richard’s journey in networking began in the 1990s after transitioning from his career as an emergency medical technician. Hired by a pipeline company as a computer analyst, his passion for information technology quickly grew. Over time, he rose to manage network administration and engineering for three major pipeline manufacturing facilities. His expertise expanded through roles in telephony, VOIP, and network management for companies like Valero.
In 2006, the media world called, and Richard pursued broadcast production and engineering, starting with youth programs and evolving into broader productions where he also served as a host.
Now, Richard's latest passion project, Solar Homestead Life, blends his love for solar energy, DIY solutions, and homesteading. This shift was solidified during a visit to the Signature Solar Superstore, where an inner voice led him to start documenting the experience—sparking the birth of Solar Homestead Life.
